Guinea: Tax levied on telephone communications

  • Date de création: 02 juillet 2015 22:52

(Agence Ecofin) - The minister of Post, Telecommunications and ICT, Oyé Guilavogui, officially announced the enforcement of a tax on telecommunications in a press release. The communiqué explains that "this law is applicable to all telephone service users, at a rate of GF1 per second per call and concerns all types of telephone calls, landline and mobile, local and international, interconnections and roaming".

The goal of this tax is to support the country's economy, deeply affected by the epidemic of Ebola hemorrhagic fever since beginning 2014. The minister of Posts and Telecommunications and the deputy minister for Budget called on "Guineans to show their patriotic spirit by participating in this national effort" which was established for "the superior interest of the nation of Guinea".

Anticipating the anxiety of consumers regarding this tax, Oyé Guilavogui stressed that "he will remain watchful and keep track with the mobile telephone operators to ensure that the law is respected and the interest of the consumers protected above all".
